What is the main topic or focus of the chapter? In other words, what specific aspect(s) of public speaking does the author address in your chapter? 2. What are the key/main ideas? (She presents these in a variety of ways for easy recognition, such as with dedicated chapter sections, graphics, and highlighted/bolded type, and also at the end of each chapter for review.)

Overview: This assignment requires you to summarize one of the 13-16 chapters of our textbook, Invitation to Public Speaking by Cindy L. Griffin (5th Edition). In fitting with the student learning outcomes for this course, this assignment will give you more experience PRESENTING (speaking) while also giving you valuable experience summarizing and citing source material. Assignment: Each of you will summarize the ENTIRE chapter about which you and the members of your group will present on WEEK 7. In this summary, you’ll want to consider and address such matters as: 1. What is the main topic or focus of the chapter? In other words, what specific aspect(s) of public speaking does the author address in your chapter? 2. What are the key/main ideas? (She presents these in a variety of ways for easy recognition, such as with dedicated chapter sections, graphics, and highlighted/bolded type, and also at the end of each chapter for review.) 3. The ideas Griffin discusses that we have discussed in class as well. This ought to help you focus your short paper. Style/format: For this class we are using APA format, the academic writing and organization scheme recommended by the American Psychological Association, which is widely used in college writing at all levels. A link to the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) is on our Moodle page’s main module. OWL is a terrific resource that provides tips and guidance on how to cite sources in several of the most common academic formats, including APA. You’ll want to consult it for how to: 1. Format a general academic paper in APA style. Consult this specific section of OWL: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01. It is a subheading of the menu item “Types of APA papers.” 2. Write a proper “References” page. (Keep in mind that you only have ONE source to cite: our textbook. But your reference page needs to specifically cite YOUR CHAPTER in your citation.) 3. Properly cite the book in your paper (so-called “in-text” citation). Guidelines: 1. Your paper needs to follow APA guidelines in terms of font/typeface, point size and margins. 2. Two to three pages in length. You will NOT be deducted grading points for going a little over. 3. You need neither an abstract (which is used mainly when writing up original research) nor a cover page. Helpful writing hint: Though you will name the book and the chapter in the title of your paper, it is proper to name them in the first paragraph of your paper. Therefore, do NOT start your paper with, “In this chapter…” Rather, consider starting with something like: “In chapter 15 of Invitation to Public Speaking, Cindy L. Griffin (2015) addresses the persuasive aspects of public dialogue. The chapter, entitled “Persuasive Speaking,” addresses, among other topics, the different types of persuasive speeches, how to organize such speeches, how to connect to an audience, and the roles of emotion and evidence in persuasive speeches.” Grading: This assignment is worth 100 points. You will earn top marks if you show not only attention to the matters addressed in this assignment brief but also manage to successfully incorporate them into your paper. “B” work will show some level of this that was not fully portrayed on paper. “C” work will show some attention but little actualization of the guidelines and formatted mandated. “D” work will show little attention to any of this. YES, spelling and punctuation matter. This paper will not be accepted late. Presentation: You and your group members (who also summarized your chapter in their own papers) will make a short presentation about it on 10/11
